Men's Health Women's Health Night Run Penang 2016 by AIA Vitality- It Was My Lucky Night!

Men's Health Women's Health Night Run is back! It's going to be a Trifecta Medal this year.

This was the first out of three series for MHWH Night Run AIA Vitality. They kick started the series in Penang on 2 April followed by MHWH Night Run by AIA Vitality in Putrajaya on 30 July and the final leg will be held in Nusajaya, Johor Bahru ~ 7 January 2017

Honestly speaking I was never a fan for any night run, especially on a hot and humid island like in Penang. Therefore I would rather run 12km than to endure the suffering 21km night run hehehee... 12km cukup lah kan ehh....

Prior to this event, three of us made a pact for a quick road trip to Penang. Daud, Rashid and I were already planning to run in Penang together since both of them won the AIA Malaysia Facebook contest for all 3 series run (HM). Plus it has been a long time I haven't come to Penang be it for a runcation or makanthon. The last time was during Asics PBIM 2015. So this road trip was hard to resist hehee... Lambaian nasi kandaq gituh...

However at the very 11th hour, Daud could not make it for the road trip. So it's just two of us, the Dynamic Duo went to Penang by Rashid's car. Just like those old days before but this time Rashid drove all the way. Yessss, I`m the co-pilot hoho...
Say Pasemboq Gelek!
We took the Second Penang Bridge because it's nearer to the Queensbay Mall & I just love reminiscing my PBIM 2014
We started our journey to Penang on Saturday morning and reached the Island circa 2.00 - 2.30 pm. Went straight ahead for our lunch in Kayu Original Nasi Kandar near Vistana. Boy, how I missed my sinfully delicious divine Nasi Kandar so much, especially the thick finger licking spicy curry. Yummeh!
The culprit of the day.... But super yummilicious!
After that we went to check in at Apple 1 Budget Hotel. Luckily there were some  extra rooms for the night. We had to take the room for 3 person. The room was spacious, the bed was comfy and the price was reasonable. Although the wifi connection was so-so but who cares, right? It's just a quick getaway. Runcation la katakan... Chill chill sude....

Look see look see session around the race village.. hehee #TeamUltron2016

Once everything was settled, we went to the race village just to have a glance at all the sponsor and co-sponsor booths. For the record, ULTRON was the Gold Sponsor for this event. Met several friendly Ultron Ambassador Runners at the booth.Took some pictures with them...
Demi contest ku sanggup relakan jiwa ehh... Feeling Cover Guy ELLE sangat!
Lucky Wheel of Fortune Spin At AIA Vitality Booth...

Both of us went to the race village with Tokdad Romzi. We took part in some of the contests and games at the booths. Mongoose Publishing booth, Petron, Otterbox and Salonpas. Just trying our luck. I won a cute smartphone resting part from Otterbox. Yayyy!
Me & Rashid strolling at the Race Village... Kepochi here and there ehh... Credits pic to Tokdad Romzi
Went back to the hotel and preparing ourselves for the event. My tummy was not feeling well, rumbling. Went to the loo several times but still not that occay. Bloated most probably due to the sinful nasi kandar curry. That's not a good sign. I just walloped Runbananaz before the run.
I`m An Ultron Winner... Happiness Is My Middle Name hohoho!

Runners were already flooding the Race Village since 5.30 onwards...So happening indeed!

They released the 5km fun run first followed by 12km and 21km runners. This was the first time I saw this kind of reversed flag off.

Went into the starting gantry and off we went by 8.20 pm. Bumped into Sandra Cheah during the 1st kilometre dash and I slowed down gradually later on because I went too fast too early hahaa...  Talking about over excited much.
Sandra Cheah and I after the run.... Nice to bump into you babe... =D
We were running towards the big roundabout and went up the flyover towards the other side of the highway. We ran towards the industrial SEAGATE area of Bayan Lepas. Running under the pass was pretty dark. Luckily the street lights were bright enough for me to see the route.

Upon reaching the u-turn point circa 5.5km @ 6km, my tummy started to acting up again. Felt so painful and uncomfortable. Really need to hang on and reduced my pace to walking while looking for the nearest toilet. Unfortunately there was no portable loo. Had to tumpang the nearby loo at the small seafood eatery. Cannot tahan anymore LOL! Felt much better afterwards oops TMI...

The return route was flat and straight all the way towards the FL. Most of the route was dark. I had to run carefully and look for any pot holes or uneven surface. Finally managed to cross the FL under 1h40min++ hoho... Super slow me! Hahaa... Damn you nasi kandaq hoho... Lesson learned... The hard way again...Sigh...
Awesome Triangle Finisher Medal for MHWH Penang Series although there's no distance at the back or front...
Once I reached the FL, received my finisher medal, banana n drinking bottle. Went to the next canopy to take the goodie bag. Quite a lot of stuffs inside here. I was impressed!
Catch Of The Night... BAD LAB Men's Skincare Products & Movie Vouchers from PETRON Malaysia.
Selfie with New Balance Shades won by Captain Rashid RMR is a must hoho! Congrats =P

To make the night run even more memorable, I received two SMSes informing that I won the men's care products from BAD LAB worth RM120 for the Quiz contest and Petron lucky draw. I received the free TGV movie voucher for two. Could not get any happier than this... Woot2! This must be my lucky night.... Alhamdulillah...

Captain Ultron Rashid and Joanne Kay, CEO of Ultron with her precious little princess Gemma....
Congrats to all of us, Azrie, Kak Lily and Tokdad Romzi! All 12km Runners...
After the run, we went to the room and freshened us up first before joining Tokdad, Azrie and Kak Lily for the supper at Nasi Kandar Beratur near Kapitan Keling Mosque. Had a hearty chat while eating and went back to hit the sack.

Breakfast Like A King hohohi!
Next morning we went to Astaka Taman Tun Sardon for our breakfast. I just had to order the famous chicken martabak there along with wantan noodle hehee... There were variety of choices of food for breakfast there. So many people thronged here for all the delicious authentic Penang food like kuih serabai, roti parata, nasi lemak, nasi lemuni and gulai ikan termenung.

All in all, I enjoyed my short runcation. Run - checked, Makan2 - checked.... I will be back Penang for more! Could not get enough of Penang whenever I was in town... heheee....
                                           Enjoy the video guys!
Oh, before I almost forget, the registration is still open for the MHWH Night Run by AIA Vitality in Putrajaya on 30 July 2016. What are you waiting for, folks? Come and join the fun... You can register for it HERE or www.hooha.asia and just follow Men's Health Malaysia or Women's Health Malaysia Facebook for more details and latest announcement yeah...
We went home via iconic Old Penang Bridge... I'll be missing you Penang!

ASICS PENANG BRIDGE INTERNATIONAL MARATHON 2014 - 2ND YEAR ANNIVERSARY FMV @ 16th FULL MARATHON

Catch of the day.... huhu... Awesome medal design, best finisher tee so far...
Helo there... Buenos dias! I know I know, this is a very very overdue entry on Asics Penang Bridge International Marathon (APBIM) 2014... I don't know why, but I don't feel like writing on this one this time around... So many cons, unpleasant experiences during this year APBIM... It's totally different compared to last year's edition... In short, we can call it a DISASTROUS running event of 2014. Ever! I'll tell you why in just a sec.

For your information, APBIM is my anniversary run for Full Marathon... Completed my 1st FM HERE in 2012 (just click HERE for more stories), celebrated my 1st year Anniversary HERE last year and this year it was my 2nd Year Anniversary FMV. I was expecting an extragavanza celebration this time around. Unfortunately it became one of my worst Anniversary Run. 2nd worst after Melaka River "International" Marathon. I don't think this year's APBIM has reached the "International" status... So much for breaking the previous MBOR in terms of numbers of participants for this year. They neglected so many aspects this time around. Too bad...

Let's set aside the negative vibes first, shall we and focus on the bright side. This year, I've decided to go to Penang with my fellow MARDI Running Buddies, Raja Del and Rashid. After all the more the merrier, right. We carpooled to Penang and stayed at Raja Del's uncle house there in Bukit Jambul during our trip. We departed on Friday night and reached Penang around 3am. Raja Del took the 2nd Bridge to the Island. That was my first time crossing the new bridge. Ever. Nampak sangat aku nih jakun... hohoho... Amazed by its mighty length and super sleek design. Really admired all the unique curves and  features. Luckily we didn't feel the obvious elevation, unlike the old 1st bridge. That's a relief hehee...
Amik berkat lalu Jambatan Kedua Pulau Pinang nih dolu... Lawa rupanyer!
Woke up around 8am, lazily. Still lack of sleep but Rashid was eager to do our so-called "annual ritual" run. So we headed to USM and ran past Vistana Hotel (we stayed there last year for PBIM, last minute thingy), went to the Stadium, took some pictures and posed here and there. There was even a Primary School Sport's Day were being held there. Then we ran towards Tasik Aman, took some pictures there too as usual.. Then we ran back towards Del's uncle house. It's our easy shake it off run walk run. Stopped over at Kayu Nasi Kandar restaurant for a light breakfast. Bumped into Pali here.. Runners was everywhere during that weekend.

Later on we went back. Getting ourselves ready for a scrumptious lunch in Nasi Padang International Penang. The traffic congestion was crazy in Georgetown on that day. Too many runners and entourage perhaps. To make it worse, it was school holidays too. Luckily we had our chance to savour the delicious lunch. It's a must for us whenever we were in Penang. Nasi Kandar can wait eh!

Once we were full and happy, we went for REPC. The sky was getting dark and it's going to rain any time soon. Actually they've already had their racekits via courier. So cheapskate of me. It looked like the queue for collecting my racekit was quite long under the scorching sun. They didn't arrange it according to the designated categories, unlike last year. Some were collecting it in bulk. Oh dear, it was not moving at all, so chaotic so I've decided to go to another lane. It was started to rain heavily and I finally received my racekit. Urghhh... It turns our that was the first sign of many unpleasant experiences to come, actually... Hmmmm...

Around REPC Saturday... - Credits RMR
We waited until the heavy rain subsided before making our way to have our early dinner. At first, we were thinking to have it at Kapitan Restaurant near QB Mall. However, the traffic congestion was super insane. Since we didn't want to waste our precious time in the crazy traffic, Del decided to go to Kassim Mustafa, Bayan Baru where they served specially prepared Ghee Rice (Nasi Dalcha), a famous traditional Indian delicacy from Kilakarai of India. Even though we were still feeling full from our heavy lunch, we had to eat something for dinner since we had to sleep early. So, I had the fragrant Nasi Dalcha with a fried chicken and mix of curry.

Kenyang lagik pon kena sumbat gak.... Sedap nih... Betol2 rare derr.... =P
After that, I went to purchase Gatorade, some bread and mineral water. Bumped into Sao Nawarat and her friend, who were having their dinner not far from us. What a lovely co-incidence. Took some picture and off we went back home. It's time to have decent night sleep before the HUGE 2nd Anniversary Run at 1.30am. I tried to shut my eyes coz I really need that deep sleep and enough rest. It's a must. Woke up around 10.40pm++ and prepped myself up. Del was generous enough to send us to the starting line since he will run his Half Marathon in 3am.

We were early this time around, unlike last year. Had plenty of time to deposit our bag, went to the portaloo to get rid of the "jitter" pee and went around to meet the usual suspects. Bumped into Ariff Syafik, Azim, Kak Ati, kRomzy, Gme, Shamroslee, Ridhwan, Meek Soon, Dr Shah also. Felt like a big reunion of runners there. Exactly after the mini fireworks show, the Men Open category participants were being flagged off. It took me 2 minutes to cross the starting line... The crowd was huge!

I`m so freaking nervous right now! Wuwuwu...
It was a humid night to run first and foremost. I felt stuffy running with my Red Riding Hood on. Tried to maintain my normal pace around 7-7.30... At least maintained a sub 8min/km pace in order to finish within sub 6 hours. That's my target at first. But some how things didn't always happen the way we wanted it to be... Crossed 5km in 41:41, still a bit sluggish but still within my normal pace. Bumped into Syed Nazrul (FMV Runner) circa 13-14km. Paced with him for a while until my back pain started to mess with my pace. We had our pep talk for a while too.  Said hi to Gme on the opposite side. He's running vlazing fast in his magical SailorStar Wizard costume! Managed to keep a constant pace until 21km a(U-turn point) with 2:53:35 (barely Sub3) It was still a humid night.. Not that windy, except at the middle of the bridge on the open sea. All I could see was light posts and so many runners all over.

I kept on chasing for that 6hours orange balloon pacer after 21km onwards. Had to stop for a toilet break circa KM24. Cannot tahan, had to do it in the nature, at the roadside ehh... =P Then I continued my mission. Shuffled, huffed and puffed all the way until KM30. Plenty of drinks, isotonics and bananas for all. I crossed KM32 under 4:49:58. There's no way I could cover another 10km under 1hours 10minutes.  Around 32-35 km another nature call no.2 was really bugging me. I don't think I want to use the portaloo on the bridge so I soldiered on and tried to finish this asap. As I approached the final 5km, I've merged with the 10km runners. To my horror, I could see how difficult they were thronging the narrow two lanes bridge to get to the U-turn point. Saw Aizat Razak, Pali, Cruz running on the other side, saying hi and cheered to tired old me... Thanks guys!

Luckily the crowd was still bearable and runnable. I kept on running and had a slow run along the final stretch. Finally I crossed the Finishing Line (over distanced 42.56km according to my Garmin) under 6:25:38 (nett time). Syukur, Alhamdulillah... 16th FM under my belt. Not my best time but I took it gladly. Especially when we ran in stuffy hot costume like mine... hehee...The FL was so narrow, no separation for each category. It was too crowded and so confusing actually... Bad bad idea...To make it worse, all FM finishers would have to queue up under the hot sunny Sunday to collect their finisher tee according to the their sizes. Luckily mine was size L so the line was not that long. I was queueing up at M size lane before coz there's no one told me to queue up accordingly. Saw this one runner argued with the volunteer about the long line. After that, all FM finishers were treated with cold Milo drinks, 100 Plus, Yakult and some snacks... I didn't take those snacks... Too tired to do so. I decided to go and collect my bag at the starting line.

Being interviewed as soon as I reached the FL.... I couldn't think straight n still gasping... Hope I answered correctly... =P
Met so many familar faces along the way. Took pictures with them. Rashid told me that he had to wait quite long to retrieve his bag back although they've tagged the bags with numbers and all computerized sorts. Didn't wait for long coz it was getting hotter. Once we were ready, we headed out towards the carpark. Still had to walk 1-2km or so to reach Del's car. Hehee... The traffic congestion was so chaotic around the venue. No wonder all the shuttle buses couldn't reach the venue in time, as being promised by the organizer.

All in all, I had a good run actually... What a great memorable road runcation too after all... But the venue was not convenient for an "International" level marathon. So many runners were complaining about almost everything. Some even determined to boycott it next year if they still wanted to do it on the 2nd Bridge. I would rather ran Standard Chartered Bangkok Marathon next year than this forever record breaking marathon (Read: Profit-oriented maybe). Other than that, the volunteers were super friendly and helpful... Thank you so much for all your selfless sacrifices and contribution throughout the race.
Kami Dah Nak Pulang... Lawa btol casa impian nih...
Till then, sayonara!

Hat Yai International Marathon 2014 (8th) - Double The Fun, Double The Heat!

Tudiah Rombongan Makhayam Gme @ Cik Kiah  9 Bersaudara di Hat Yai... Hohoho...
Sawadekap...

Helo there! Welcome once again to my humble warm fuzzy running blog...

Today I wanted to share with you on my not so recent Hat Yai International Marathon 2014. For the record, it was my 11th Full Marathon till date. I haven't give my review on my 10th FM (2XU Compression Run SG) yet due to the traumatic severe chafings experience. Even don't want to remember about it at all hohoho... (Read: Traumatic)

Occay, enough of whining. Let's get back to the real story. I was so looking forward to come back here again after having such a great time running a good race last year (feel free to read it HERE).

Super comfy room and the bathroom was spacious too... Luv it!!!  Value for your money =)
This year I planned to go there on a very tight budget. I've booked a return trip bus ticket. Decided to go there on Friday night and arrived in Hat Yai on Saturday, 24 May 2014 around 9.30 am local time. Had a light breakfast before went to Green View Hotel for an early check in. The room was spacious and cheap too (RM75++ per night for two). Plus it was quite near to the starting line and within walking distance, about 1 km. Gme decided to stay with me during the 2D1N stay in Hat Yai. Cost effective totally.. =D

Rombongan Cik Kiah Berenam Pose2 Depan Hotel Green View Dolu....
From the hotel, Gme, Yours Truly, Ruud, Suhirman, Baizatul and An walked towards the Jiranakorn Stadium to collect our racekit. The process was very smooth and we're done in a jiffy. Met several Malaysian running groups too at the venue, including bf Kahwai, Uncle Tan & friends. We took some photos together. Plus the mini expo was totally irresistable. Bought some running shorts at a very cheap prices and good quality too (although imitation one).

Teruja sangat nih pose2 patriotic selepas mengambil running bib dan baju event... Huhuu
This is a must pose in front of the Jiranakorn Stadium... Nice lucky number though =D
After the REPC, we took a tuktuk and went straight away to Kay Tod Daycha (Pokok Mangga) for our non spicy lunch. We really ate a hearty authentic Thai cuisine, I tell you. So delicious! *Martylar bermulanya makanthon sampai lebam!
Tanda2 kebuluran jelas terpancar di wajah masing- masing... hohohoo
Siakap Stim Halia nih memang sedap khap khun khap!!!
Later on we decided to pay a visit to the famous Klonghae Floating Market. But before that we stopped by at the hotel to fetch forever gorgeous Miss Aeda, Am and Wani. So now there were 9 of us squeezed in a small tuktuk. Felt like in a sardine can hewhewhew...

Once we reached the floating market, we went for a stroll on the new bridge. Took some selfie picture on a very hot and bright sunny Saturday! Bumped into Ezam and his super friends there. Not many tourists were spotted on that day, probably due to the fear of series of bombings in the Southern Thailand and martial law enforcement in Thailand. I just bought myself a tantalizing creamy glutinous sticky rice mango (pulut mangga). And It was just 30 Baht!  Woot2..

After that we went back to the stadium to attend the free carboloading session. Didn't eat any as I was still full from the heavy lunch + pulut mangga. Met the global marathon icon YKK (42 FMs total on his belt) and the Southern Thailand sweetheart, Ms Thilda Sanjoren. She was so friendly! Didn't miss the opportunity to take some pics with them. ;D

Later on, we went for a walk around the city centre. Honestly my feet were killing me after an all day long walk and wanted a rest so badly. Once we tapaued our dinner, we went straight ahead to the hotel for an early rest. I dozed off while those marathon maniacs trio went to the huge night market in the search of Gme's glamorous wigs. Hahaa. Talking about sheer determination!

Kami lah geng yang x pernah kenal erti penat lelah setiap kali melancong di tempat orang heheee
Capek Lumayan bersama Cik Gme Yang Forever Energetik ehh...
I woke up around 2.15 am. Feeling so fresh but still a bit sleepy. Thanks to Aeda's wake up call. Hahaa! Felt like kicking myself for not preparing all the apparel in advance... Dang! Rushed towards the starting line and managed to reach there around 3 am! Took some photos before the flagoff and by 3.30 am off we go!

There were not so many people running the FM that morning. Around 300-400 I think. Running in a pelikat pants and Indo batik shirt screamed suicidal to me since I could feel the extreme humidity even at this wee hours! I could not run any faster in this Nusantara theme apparel. I completed my 8KM run under 1hour. From there I had to take it as my long run, knowing that a PB is not within my grasp anymore. At first, I was aiming for a Sub 6 finishing. However I was punished by the merciless sun starting from 8 am onwards.

Tranquility before the scorching bloody merciless Hatyai Sun! [ Pic by Gme ]
Running on the same route just like last year was no longer an advantage. I was running on an Ultra pace I tell ya. Could not muster any faster as the pelikat pants restricted my knees movement. Hahaa my bad! Reached the 25.5km U-Turn in 26.5 km and I could see Ruud n Suhirman were catching up on me after the u-turn. I really had to pangsai around 27km. The bush near the road served it purpose. Hahaa darurat weh! Bad news was I accumulated a serious chaffing around my bumbum due to the sweaty compression tights and undies... Ouch! I ignored the pain and kept soldier on... It was already started to get shining bright and hot! Struggled to reach the WS at 30km despite there were still some shades along the highway. From 30KM onwards, the real nightmare began!

Masih mampu lagik tersenyum ceria beria di pagi yang mendung selepas U-Turn...
Siap sempat amik selfie lagik kami berempat yang sakan bergambaq nih hohoo!
It was a clear sky. The merciless sun was shining so bright high up on the sky. The intense heat was unbearable as there were no shades available along the highway. The final 12.195km felt like a neverending journey. Running was almost impossible due to my wet shoes and I could already feel some blisters formed on both of my feet. Tried to speed walk-slow jog strategy.

Keep holding on ehh walaupon dah mula mental gilerrr.... [ Pic courtesy of Mr. Tan ]
Almost had a heat stroke coz I could feel my heart rate was almost off the chart. I Felt like I want to lay down and rest every time I found a shade along the way. Luckily there were plenty of iced cold water to quench my thirst and I splashed some on my head and back! I was toasted on the blazing Sunny Sunday! T_T

I knew I almost hit the wall after the KM36. My mental was tested to the max. I could only do some speed walk until KM41! It was super blazing hot and already past 6 hours and 30 minutes! Thank goodness once I saw the finishing arch within my sight and a runner waving our Jalur Gemilang, I dashed through the finishing line in 6:46:35. Heard the emcee announcing my name and i'm from Malaysia! Thank goodness! PW? Who cares, my moving time was 6:35:00. hohohoo

Once I received the finisher medal and tshirt, I went straight towards the food tent as I was ravished in hunger. Almost took a pork meal and luckily Ms Thilda came offering me with the heaven sent Thailand Chicken Yellow Rice. After that I went towards the FL and took photos with fellow Malaysian runners and with our finisher tee too ;D
Taubat dah xmahu lari dalam pelikat pants nih.... Insaf2! Panas wehh!

Later we took a tuktuk and went back to the hotel to pack our stuffs up before we checked out at 1230pm. Gme and I put our bags at Am's room and we went for a self rewarding lunch at Pokok Mangga. Again. But this time we had a spicy mixed tom yum, mango salad, deep fried battered calamari, fried chicken and steamed barramundi with lime. Totally yummeh! I met Azrie and Sis Lily here too.

After the dellghtful lunch, we went back to the hotel and managed to doze off a bit while waiting for our bus on 7 pm.  The journey back home was a breeze.

Overall my marathon + makanthon + photothon went well just like I've planned... Not much issues except for the chaffings and small blisters. I was glad that I took Hammer Anti Fatigue Caps accordingly. Should take Endurolyte caps too next time.  A very well organised event with plenty of iced drinking water, sweet syrup, watermelon cut, banana, herbal jelly and icy coke at some WS. Love the golden finisher medal this year, it was heavier than last year hohoho... =P

Highlights of JJCM Hat Yai 2014
Insaf? Biasalah tuh selepas habis sahaja acara... Hahaa... Next time I have to be more careful in selecting my running apparel especially when running in a tropical country like Thailand. Less cotton, more dri fit material then. I think I'll stick to wearing a pelikat pants for a 10km fun run only.

Till then, cheers mate!

XOXO

P/S: For those who are looking forward to run Hat Yai Marathon 2015, please save and block this date in advance 31 May 2015 yaa.... Toodles! =)

Feel free to refer to my GARMIN data HERE....  Merci!
